FROM FLAT ROOF TO LIVING SPACE

Anchor 1

HOW THE NURAGRID GREEN ROOF SYSTEM MAKES IT POSSIBLE

As roof spaces are increasingly designed for outdoor use and sustainability, extensive green roofs offer a way to transform rooftops into purposeful landscapes while improving how buildings look and perform.

The Nuragrid Green Roof System is a lightweight, modular solution that lifts the build‑up above the waterproof membrane. It supports planting, paving and trafficable turf while protecting the membrane below and maintaining access, drainage and long-term durability.

System Overview

The Nuragrid Green Roof System is a modular extensive green roof assembly supported by Nurajack’s self-levelling adjustable pedestal system and Nuragrid interlocking grid panels. Designed to support a complete green roof build-up without imposing heavy structural demands, the system is installed above the waterproof membrane to create a ventilated cavity that promotes drainage and airflow while allowing access for inspection and maintenance.

The result is a lightweight, serviceable and easy-to-maintain alternative to traditional built-up green roofs. By separating the green roof from the waterproofing layer, the system helps reduce long-term risk and supports membrane longevity while enhancing versatility and aesthetics in layout and design.

Key Benefits

  • Lightweight system suited to extensive green roofs

  • Ventilated cavity above the membrane for protection and long-term performance

  • Adjustable self-levelling pedestals to manage slopes and uneven substrates

  • Seamless integration of planting, paving and trafficable turf

  • Integrated drainage with optional water retention cups

  • Easy access for ongoing inspection and maintenance of the membrane

Components and Installation

The system uses standard Nuragrid panels combined with geotextile cloth and optional aluminium edging to form perimeter containment for the growing medium. Nurajack self-levelling pedestals support the system and allow for height adjustment across the roof, making it suitable for both new builds and retrofit applications.

Optional water retention cups clip directly into the Nuragrid, providing controlled moisture retention while maintaining free drainage beneath the system. Additional drainage layers and ballast can be incorporated, depending on project requirements.

Planting, Growing Media and Maintenance

The Nuragrid Green Roof System is typically used with low-water, drought-tolerant planting such as sedums and succulents. These species perform well in shallow, free-draining growing media, supporting root health while keeping overall system weight low. Planting layout, density and species selection should be specified by the project landscaper.

Soil depth should be determined as part of the project design, as shallow growing media will generally not support larger plant species. The Nuragrid system supports and contains the specified soil depth, while the planting design is defined by the project landscaper.

A 50mm right-angle aluminium edge is commonly used to align with standard tile thicknesses where green roof areas transition to paved podium decks. The aluminium angle is available in heights up to 150mm to suit varying soil depths. This approach creates a softened, feathered transition between planted and paved areas while maintaining a lightweight overall build-up. This allows planted and paved zones to finish flush, simplifying detailing and coordination of contractors on site.

Extensive green roofs typically require only one to two maintenance visits per year for weed control, inspection and seasonal checks. Irrigation requirements vary by climate, with drip systems commonly used where needed.

Integrated Planters and Mixed‑Use Roofs

Where greater planting depth is required, planter boxes supported by Nurajacks can be integrated within the system. This allows larger plant species to be introduced without increasing soil depth across the entire roof and ensures protection of the membrane.

Because the Nuragrid Green Roof System is built on the same Nurajack pedestal, rooftop paving, decking and green roof areas can be installed together at the same finished height. This enables versatile mixed-use roof layouts without complex transitions.

Designed for Long‑Term Performance

By elevating the green roof build-up on pedestals, the system ensures continuous drainage, airflow and access to the waterproof membrane. Nurajack pedestals are manufactured from durable materials and are designed for long-term performance in exposed rooftop environments.

The Nuragrid Green Roof System provides a practical, lightweight solution for extensive green roofs where membrane protection, serviceability and design versatility are critical.
