SEAMLESS ELEGANCE:
TRANSFORMING CAPE KIDNAPPERS WITH NON-STRUCTURAL LIMESTONE AND
THE NURAGRID
Cape Kidnappers, a luxurious golf resort in the Hawke’s Bay, aimed to create an indoor-outdoor feel for their internal courtyard. The resort, known for its high-end design, wanted to use non-structural limestone to maintain consistency with the stone used throughout the interior of their building.
Client Background and Challenges
The resort faced several challenges:
-
A raised and removable solution over waterproof membrane was required.
-
They desired to match the existing stone pavers and layout.
-
Non-structural antique limestone pavers with rumbled edges were selected.
-
The stone needed to be laid in a French lay pattern in various sizes.
Solution and Implementation
To address these challenges, Nuragrid (previously Nurajack Safety Grid) on Nurajacks was selected to produce a raised and removable platform which provided full support to any tile format.

-
Preparation: A full site measure was undertaken by the installing contractor, using innovative tools such as the Nurajack Deck Design Tool and Quantity Calculator found here: QUANTITY CALCULATOR
-
Nuragrid Installation: The grid panels were installed with a centre pedestal for extra support. The self-levelling head and wide base of the Nurajack ensured the Nuragrid was flat and firm while the membrane had no point-loading, even around outlets.
-
Tile Installation: The 20mm, non-structural, rumbled edge limestone was glued onto the Nuragrid. This strengthened the tile to reach a typical structural tile strength.
Results and Benefits
The project resulted in a high-end courtyard that matched the interior design standards of the resort. The use of the Nuragrid offered several advantages:
-
Cost Savings: Being a 500mm x 500mm grid, supported by Nurajacks, proved to be a more cost-effective solution compared to supporting the French lay format directly on Nurajacks alone.
-
Design Versatility: The Nuragrid allowed for the use of non-structural small format tiles, which are not possible with pedestals.
-
Durability: The glued tiles provided full support, strengthening the non-structural limestone.
This case study demonstrates how innovative solutions like the Nuragrid can overcome traditional challenges in the building industry, providing cost-effective and aesthetically pleasing results.
