STEPPING SAFELY

SECURE OUTDOOR SPACES
WITH NURAJACK

Creating safe, stylish outdoor spaces starts with the right foundation. Outdoor tiles and pavers are a top choice for patios, decks and rooftop areas thanks to their durability and low maintenance. But safety is just as important as aesthetics.

With Nurajack’s pedestal system and Nurajack Nuragrid, you can build outdoor environments that are secure, level and built to last.

Slip Resistance for Safer Surfaces

Slip resistance is key in outdoor design—especially in wet or high-traffic areas. In New Zealand, the NZS 4586 standard uses the Pendulum Test to measure how well a surface resists slipping. This test produces a Slip Resistance Value (SRV), with higher SRVs indicating better grip underfoot and a reduced risk of slips and falls.

Another commonly referenced method is the German DIN 51130 Ramp Test, which assigns an R-rating from R9 to R13. As with SRV, a higher R-rating means greater slip resistance, with R13 offering the highest level of traction—ideal for wet or commercial environments.

To improve slip resistance:

  • Choose textured tiles or permeable pavers like Horizon International’s WaiPave, which allow water to drain through, reducing puddles and icy patches.

  • Select tiles with high SRV or R-ratings—the higher the number, the better the traction in slippery conditions.

Durability and Strength in Every Step

Outdoor tiles must withstand changing weather, foot traffic and impact. Porcelain, stone and concrete pavers offer excellent strength and longevity. For raised flooring applications using pedestal systems like Nurajack, structural tiles are essential to ensure stability and performance.

Typical paver thicknesses for pedestal applications are:

  • Porcelain: 20mm

  • Stone: 40mm

  • Concrete: 50mm (or reinforced with mesh).

The Nuragrid can also support some non-structural pavers and synthetic turf, expanding your outdoor design options without compromising safety.

Eliminating Trip Hazards

Uneven surfaces are a common cause of trips and falls. Nurajack’s self-levelling pedestals automatically adjust to surface variations, creating a stable, level finish—even across sloped terrain. The system allows tiles to be raised to match interior floor levels, creating seamless indoor–outdoor transitions with no step-downs or trip edges. The system also removes the need for strip drains at door thresholds, further enhancing safety.

Emergency Egress

In high-traffic zones and emergency egress areas, surface stability is critical. The Nuragrid system provides robust support for raised tile installations, keeping tiles securely in place and trafficable—even if a tile was to break. When paired with Nurajack pedestals, the system maintains a flat, level surface—minimising trip hazards and improving accessibility.

Lighting and Visibility

Lighting enhances safety and ambience. Path lights, uplights and step lighting help define walkways and highlight potential hazards. With floated tile systems, electrical cabling can be run discreetly beneath the surface—making it easier to integrate lighting without compromising aesthetics.

Other Smart Safety Considerations

Beyond slip resistance and structural integrity, there are additional safety factors that enhance comfort, accessibility and long-term performance in outdoor environments. Key considerations are:

  • Thermal Conductivity: Dark tiles can get hot in direct sun. Choose materials with lower thermal conductivity to avoid discomfort.

  • Glare Reduction: Lighter tiles reflect more sunlight, which can cause glare—especially in open areas.

  • Accessibility: Ensure surfaces are level and slip-resistant for users with mobility needs.

By combining thoughtful design with smart systems like Nurajack’s pedestal system and Nuragrid, you can create outdoor spaces that are safe, stylish and built to perform.
